If we can
encourage the Council to take that step, perhaps they can
move forward. It's the Whole-Home rentals that are scarring
the neighborhoods the most. Whether it's vacant and inviting
burglary, or full of strangers, it's a problem, and no one
wants to live next door to a house full of unsupervised party
animals. Any AirBnB property should have a manager on duty.
We need to help the Council understand what sorts of specific
rules they need to enact.Stuart McNairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05425104963066179929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24843854.post-34508554963291327932015-10-01T06:13:12.514-05:002015-10-01T06:13:12.514-05:00We are travelling around the world using Airbnb an...We are travelling around the world using Airbnb and the fantastic places we get to stay and hosts we get to meet make the trip so much richer.Foocyhttps://www.zoplay.com/web/airbnb-for-food/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24843854.post-84099363944135611802015-08-08T10:48:54.942-05:002015-08-08T10:48:54.942-05:00I'm a fellow New Orleans renter trying to figh...I'm a fellow New Orleans renter trying to fight the good fight against the spread of Airbnb and similar business models. Your writing is powerful and dead on. You were quoted in the comments of a nola.com article about Airbnbs, and I tracked down your blog. There is a strong anti-Airbnb movement starting, but most of them are white, older homeowners. Which is great, their grievances are real, and a lot of them have solid connections with lawyers and neighborhood associations and people within city hall. But we need the renters to step up as well. We're the ones being displaced, we're the ones that no longer have access to the 1,700 apartments listed on Airbnb. And we make up over 50% of the city. There are countless reasons we don't own houses, and none of them have to do with a lack of investment in our city.

One of the defenses I hear a lot from the pro-Airbnb contingency is that they're doing the city a favor by bringing in all the tourist revenue. But let's read between the lines there. What they're saying is that a tourist is more valued than a local, that somehow filling that apartment with a full time renter would bring in less money for the city than a tourist. Which is hogwash. The tourist is here for the weekend and the fair weather months. Sure, they spend more money than I do when they're in town, but then they leave. Monday-Thursday I'm still buying groceries, buying gas, and patronizing my local music scene. Despite the brutal heat of summer, I'm still working my job, and paying my local income taxes on any money I bring in at said job. Add to that the fact that at the bottom of this displacement chain are people being pushed into public and subsidized housing, which costs us all money. A report just came out that people that live in the Florida Projects live on average 25 years less than the rest of New Orleans, due most likely to the crime rate and the fact that it was built on top of a toxic waste dump. So more sick people, more people pushed to the outer limits of society and all the violence and dysfunction that comes with it. And yet turning our housing into hotels is still a good business model for the city?

Anyway, keep writing on this. People are listening.

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04006881728946189867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24843854.post-90307322164762184822015-07-31T15:22:59.385-05:002015-07-31T15:22:59.385-05:00^ the brain trust has arrived, i see. ^ the brain trust has arrived, i see.
